How Can I Improve My Sprinkler System?

Through regular sprinkler maintenance, you can ensure that your sprinkler system operates at optimal effectiveness and efficiency to keep your lawn lush and your plants healthy.

Of course, even the best installations can encounter issues and require sprinkler system repairs. With that in mind, let’s explore some of the problems that sprinkler owners may encounter, the solutions to those problems, and some ways to enhance your sprinkler system’s efficiency.

Common Issues and How To Fix Them

Clogged Sprinkler Heads

When sprinkler heads become clogged, water distribution becomes uneven, which can cause problems for your lawn. A simple fix is to use a slender piece of wire to carefully unclog the nozzle. Regularly check and clean the sprinkler heads to ensure they function correctly, maximizing your irrigation system’s effectiveness.

Leaking Sprinklers and Valve Boxes

When sprinklers leak, water distribution becomes uneven, water is needlessly wasted and your utility bills rise. Waterlogged valve boxes and wet patches in your lawn also indicate a problem that needs dealing with. Inspect your valves and sprinklers for cracks or worn-out seals, and if needed, either repair or replace faulty components. Another cause of leaks is loose connections.

Misdirected Sprinkler Heads

When sprinkler heads are misaligned, water spray can find its way onto walkways, pavements, walls, and other areas that are not meant to be watered. Simply adjust the heads to redirect the spray pattern to where you want it to go.

Fine Mist or Fog During Watering

Have you noticed that your sprinklers are producing a fine mist, rather than spraying the way they should? This could indicate that the water pressure in the system is too high, causing the water to atomize. Reducing the water pressure will help prevent the water from evaporating before it reaches the plants.

Consider having a pressure regulator installed to maintain optimal pressure levels. This will prevent this problem from occurring.

Enhancing Sprinkler System Efficiency

Here are some ways you can enhance the efficiency of your sprinkler system.

Programming a Timer

Using a programmable timer can significantly enhance the efficiency of your sprinkler system. A timer can help you set specific watering times for different areas so that lawns, trees, shrubs, and flower gardens can all receive exactly the right amount of water at the right time of the day, maximizing the impact of your irrigation system.

Smart Controllers

We at Smart Earth Sprinklers highly recommend that our clients invest in a smart controller, which helps to adjust watering schedules based on weather conditions.

These controllers take information from weather forecasts and local rain sensors to optimize watering levels, thereby reducing waste and ensuring healthier plants. All of this is automated, so the pressure isn’t on you.

Zoning

Another way to ensure that your sprinkler system is as efficient as possible is to divide your landscape into various zones based on the watering needs of the different plant types, whether it’s a lawn, a tree, a shrub, or a flower bed.

You can dictate precise watering schedules for each zone to prevent overwatering and underwatering, depending on the needs of the zone and the plants within it.

Drip Irrigation

Drip irrigation is an extremely effective, water-efficient way of ensuring that your plants receive exactly the right amount of water. Drip irrigation can be used for shrubs, flower gardens, and even vegetable gardens.

Drip systems deliver water directly to the roots in a controlled and gentle manner, which minimizes the possibility of water being evaporated before it can reach the plants and also reduces the amount of water wasted through runoff.

It’s a much more efficient way of watering than traditional spray systems, but it does require a bit more maintenance, as drip irrigation systems are more vulnerable since they are just under the surface..

Maintenance and Seasonal Repairs

A key part of ensuring that your sprinkler system remains in top condition is to ensure that it receives regular maintenance and seasonal checks. Despite your best efforts, sprinkler systems often suffer minor breakdowns and need repairs and replacements.

If this maintenance schedule is upheld regularly, then the maintenance costs and repairs will be minimal. However, if you leave it for an extended period, the problems with your sprinkler system compound and start to become expensive to sort out.

Let’s look at some maintenance and seasonal repair recommendations.

Start Up Inspection

It is recommended that you inspect your entire sprinkler system for leaks, clogs, and misaligned heads at the beginning of the watering season. Systematically test each zone to ensure proper operation and adjust the settings accordingly.

Doing this at the start of spring will help you identify problems early on so that they can be rectified before you spend the whole spring and summer seasons wasting water.

Mid-Season Check

To be absolutely thorough, it’s a good idea to give your sprinkler system a once-over midway through the season as well. This is to just make sure everything is still operating as it should and that no leaks have formed.

During this inspection, look for signs of wear and tear, such as cracked pipes, damaged heads, misalignments, and leaks. If needed, you can carry out repairs during this check. You should also clean any filters and replace any faulty parts while you’re at it.

Winterization

Before the first winter freeze, you should make sure that your sprinkler system is properly winterized to prevent any damage from occurring due to frozen water in the pipes.

While you do want to keep the sprinkler system operating on a much reduced basis going into the winter, both for your lawn’s health as well as to keep the system components wet and lubricated, it is critical that you prepare before a freeze does occur. That is when you need to shut the system down and drain water from the sprinkler heads and insulate exposed pipes, valves and the backflow preventer. Doing this will help prevent damage when the temperatures drop to freezing, so that everything operates as it should when you start your system up again.
