As temperatures drop in Central Texas, it’s time to start thinking about winterizing your sprinkler system, especially before that first freeze hits. Based on historical weather data from the National Weather Service, freezes in the Austin area can begin as early as late November, with the most frequent freezes occurring from mid-December through early February.
At Smart Earth Sprinklers, we offer a comprehensive Winter Freeze Prep Service to protect your irrigation system from potential cold-weather damage, especially important if you have exposed components or an above-ground backflow preventer.
Why Winter Freeze Prep Matters
While many Texas sprinkler systems are installed below the frost line and often avoid major issues, any exposed components like above-ground pipes, valves, or backflow preventers are highly vulnerable to damage during prolonged hard freezes.
Without proper insulation and prep, a cold snap can cause:
- Cracked valves and fittings
- Bursting backflow devices
- Leaking pipes and sprinkler heads
- Costly emergency repairs
Our Winter Freeze Prep Service: Just $165
Our flat-rate service includes expert inspection and prep for up to 9 sprinkler zones:
What’s Included:
- Check your Backflow Valve for proper protection
- Drain the Backflow Device, when applicable
- Identify and inspect vulnerable freeze points in the system
- Program your controller for winter settings (upon request)
- Perform basic system diagnostics and troubleshooting
- Inspect and adjust sprinkler heads for winter readiness
- Check for broken heads, pipes, and visible leaks
- Test that zone valves operate properly
- Provide repair estimates for any issues found
A Note About System Design & Limitations
- Sprinkler systems in Texas are not designed to be “blown out” with compressed air like systems up north. Doing so improperly can violate TCEQ backflow regulations.
- Most irrigation lines are buried below the frost line, but exposed valves and devices above ground are at risk and should always be insulated.
- While we take every possible step to protect your system, no preparation method can guarantee complete protection from all freeze damage during extreme conditions.
Additional Protection for Your Backflow Preventer
If you have an above-ground backflow valve, we highly recommend buying a Backflow Insulated Cover online (such as from Amazon).
Here’s what to do:
- Measure the height and length of your above-ground valve
- Search for “Backflow Insulated Cover”
- Purchase a weatherproof, insulated model that fits securely over your valve
This added step provides an extra layer of freeze protection and is especially valuable in the event of prolonged hard freezes.
