Sprinkler irrigation can be used for a number of applications – the most common applications are for irrigating turf grass and flowerbeds. Did you know that your irrigation system can also be used to water your trees and potted plants? With a few minor repair / upgrades, we can add “tree bubblers” to almost any sprinkler system in the Austin area. Summer in Austin can really take a toll on our trees, especially newly planted trees. Trees like any other plant – they need the right amount of water to be healthy and grow. The best method for watering trees is to water at a slower rate, but for longer periods of time. As a general rule of thumb, a tree will need roughly ten gallons of water per one inch in diameter. It is recommended to water trees at least 4 times per month, in the hottest months of the year. Drought stressed trees are more vulnerable to disease, insect infestations, and branch die-back. It is also a good idea to add mulch rings around your trees to hold in the moisture. If you decide to add mulch around your trees, be careful that you do not add mulch above the bark line – by not exceeding the bark line, you can prevent potential rotting.
